Supply chains face “perpetual storm” of disruption

nShift guide identifies four ways manufacturers can future-proof supply chain logistics

Supply chains have emerged from the “perfect storm” of COVID-19 only to face a “perpetual storm” of ongoing disruption.  nShift, the global leader in shipment software, has released a new report exploring how supply chain logistics must evolve in response to these uncertainties.

From rapidly reducing labor availability to restrictions in global shipping, the pandemic created unprecedented challenges for manufacturers, warehouses and logistics providers.  Just as recovery seemed to be in sight, further global instability placed new pressures on ports, air and train freight transportation.  While each individual challenge may be temporary, commentators predict that when it comes to supply chain disruption, change is the new constant.

The new nShift report, “Building a supply chain fit for the future” sets out four ways that companies can future-proof their supply chains:

  1. Create resilient supply chains – based on real information about the status of shipments at each stage of the manufacturing process. It is also essential to boost transport capacity to deal with unexpected disruption
  2. Build a more transparent customer experience – logistics managers need to shift their mindset and embrace responsibility for shipments across the entire delivery process, not just up until it leaves the warehouse
  3. Focus on sustainability – consumers are increasingly looking to do business with companies that share their environmentally-conscious values. Manufacturers will be called upon to demonstrate their sustainability credentials across the supply chain
  4. Unlock efficiencies to save money and increase sales – siloed, manual processes reduce productivity. Access to real time information, and automated processes, can drive revenues and cut costs by up to 20%

Fredrik Lindhagen, TMS Product Director at nShift said: “Resilience and agility can no longer be seen as temporary strategies for overcoming short-term disruption.  The time has come to embed them at the heart of the supply chain.  Our new report explores how manufacturers, warehouses and logistics providers can ensure they are prepared to face a future of ongoing disruption and increase efficiency, reduce costs and boost revenue in the process.

“At the heart of dealing with disruption clear data and actionable insights.  Our Transport Management System is based around real carrier connectivity and communication, giving better visibility into the overall health and environmental impact of supply chain logistics.”
